This is a full house renovation and rear 2 storey addition to a traditional tudor style home in Leaside, completed in 2015. The house was gutted, and the basement underpinned, to create 3600 sq ft of useable space. We maintained the traditional brick front facing the street but transformed the back with the contemporary stucco and wood addition, with large sliding glass doors and horizontal lines. This 4 bedroom home has a stunning glass and wood staircase running across the rear wall that provides direct access and views to the garden, and allows a 1.5 storey wall of glass to bring daylight deep into the main living spaces of the basement and the ground floor. The landscaping of the back garden was designed as an extension of the house, complementing its clean lines and simple design.
This project presented an interesting design challenge, in that we had to work within an envelope that had already been approved by the Committee of Adjustment, based on the plans prepared by a previous designer and then rejected by the Clients.
